What about hypocrisy in the church?

You've probably heard someone say "I wouldn't be a Christian because they are hypocrites" or "the church is full of hypocrites."
Christians understand this concern. When Christians fail in following Christ they know that they are not being what their Saviour has called them to be or being a good advertisement to others of what following Christ should look like.
It is reasonable for people to have questions relating to hypocrisy in the church when Jesus speaks so firmly against hypocrisy in Matthew 23.
But failure is not unique to Christianity and, is failure the same thing as hypocrisy?
